MOMO ANNOUNCES MAGNUS WALKER SIGNATURE SERIES STEERING WHEEL
The Italian automotive accessories brand, which produces a distinctive range of steering wheels, road wheels and motorsport accessories, is in the midst of celebrating its 50th anniversary. Among the celebrations is a new steering wheel for its Signature Series, which will be officially unveiled at the Rennsport Reunion for Porsche enthusiasts at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca (September 25-27, 2015).
MOMO’s 50-year history is steeped in motorsport involvement – indeed company founder, Gianpiero Moretti, was an accomplished driver who went on to create the MOMO Signature Series, which included notables such as Jackie Stewart, Nikki Lauda, Mario Andretti, Ronnie Peterson and Gilles Villeneuve, among others.
MOMO is now led by company principal Henrique Cisneros. His enthusiasm for Porsche and love of driving took him to the door of the world-famous Porsche 911 collector and owner of the Urban Outlaw clothing brand, Magnus Walker. Through mutual friends, Henrique toured the Walker collection and noted how many of the cars sported MOMO steering wheels.
“I’ve always been a fan of MOMO and have a passion for the early Signature Series steering wheels,” explained Walker. “I actively seek them out and have Mario Andretti and Jacky Ickx wheels among my collection, although the “Jackie Stewart” is my favorite.”
The meeting would eventually lead to the creation of a Magnus Walker MOMO Signature Series steering wheel. “These things happen organically,” Walker recalled. “The conversation evolved from a shared enthusiasm, and I was honored to be asked because I believe all the previous Signature Series steering wheels were created with racing drivers. So I’m honored to be the first “mortal” included!”
With a car collection that includes one Porsche 911 from every year between 1964 and 1973, Walker’s credentials as a car enthusiast are impeccable. But he’s not all about waxing a concours car or pampering a low-mileage collectible. Magnus drives his cars hard, and has a unique approach to keeping them “real.” So he had a few suggestions for his MOMO Signature Series.
“I like the feel and patina of the older Signature Series wheels,” Walker explained, “so I wanted to capture that. I wanted to use distressed leather on the steering wheels because it would make them feel soulful and grippy.”
As a result, the Magnus Walker MOMO Signature Series steering wheel is available in distressed black leather with either silver or black metal spokes.
“I love the look of the MOMO Prototipo steering wheel,” Walker continued. “I like the retro feel of the holes in the three spokes, and the dish created by the spokes. However, I really liked the thicker grip on my Jackie Stewart Signature Series wheel, so Henrique took measurements and replicated the rim exactly.”
The Magnus Walker MOMO Signature Series steering wheel is based on the MOMO Prototipo and has a sporty 350mm diameter with a beefy 33mm grip and 37mm dish on the three metal spokes.
“I had the idea for the Urban Outlaw horn push about three years ago,” Walker said. “I simply presented it to MOMO and they produced it exactly. I love the way it came out.
“I have to admit, there is something incredibly special about driving your own car while holding your own Signature Series steering wheel in your hands,” Walker said. “I’m honored to have been invited to have a Signature Series steering wheel and hope real enthusiasts love it as well.”
You don’t have to drive a Porsche to enjoy the Magnus Walker MOMO Signature Series steering wheel. However, you do need to be on the ball. Only 200 of the black- and 200 of the silver-spoked examples will be available worldwide, priced at $329.99
The Magnus Walker MOMO Signature Series steering wheel will only be available through a limited edition microsite (magnuswalker.momo.com) created to celebrate the new venture, which will be launched following the unveiling. Every wheel is packaged in a special box designed by Magnus Walker himself, and features his iconic Porsche 911 #277.
MOMO offers a wide range of hub adapters, allowing the steering wheel to be fitted to most popular makes and model of cars, old and new.
Porsche enthusiasts will have the first opportunity to see the Magnus Walker MOMO Signature Series steering wheel when it’s officially unveiled at the Rennsport Reunion at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca (September 25-27, 2015). The weekend is organized by Porsche Cars North America and features a full schedule of Porsche racing, a wonderful array of historic road- and racecars, as well as selected exhibitors and vendors. Among them will be MOMO, with an exhibit featuring the new Magnus Walker MOMO Signature Series steering wheel.
